metux MediaCloud - Medien-Portal + Joomla

Metux MediaCloud provides an infrastructure for large media hosting platforms or video communities. It services all necessary jobs, from upload to conversion into different formats and integration into virtually any number of community portals. It's design allows load distribution into several server machines (vertical clustering), integration of many communities/portals and external systems as well as access control.

Overview and Features

With the MediaCloud platform you get the usual functionality for media portals / video communities. It consists of several components - for load distribution and redundancy (clustering), each of them may optionally be installed on its own server machine or mirrored to multiple ones.

Core features::

  • Media uploads (video, audio, pictures, etc) and display/playback via web browser.
  • Categories and tagging
  • Search
  • Internal payment system for media with costs.
  • Commenting media
  • Adding external streams as media
  • Linking to Facebook, MySpace, etc.
  • User groups
  • Integration of virtually any number of diffrent communities with own data pools and access control
  • Integration of external applications (eg. upload tools)
  • Prepared for clustering
  • Direct integration into Joomla via several extensions

MediaCloud platform structure

The MediaCloud platform consists of several subsystems. For redundancy and load balancing, these subsystems may optionally be distributed onto several server machines. The primary subsystems are:

  • Upload server: responsible for acception uploads from users and converting media to different formats
  • Download server: serving the downloads / streaming to the clients.
  • Directory server: maintains media directory of media and access control data
  • Venti storage: mass storage for media and other permanent data (in full-scale clustering, will be replaced by Nebulon Storage)
  • Portal servers: Joomla installations with MediaCloud extensions, serving the actual web sites/portals.

Multi-portal installation

MediaCloud supports many different portals in one data pool. Media visibility and access control can be configured for each portal individually. For example, one of our customers runs more than 30 portals in one MediaCloud instance, where several portals may access the media of other ones.

Each portal runs in its own namespace within its media and users live. Access control rules decide which portals make their media visible to certain others.

Clustering

The platform can be clustered, for load balancing and redundancy. According to the customers needs, several subsystems can be moved to their own machines or redunantly installed onto multiple ones. The actual approach heavily depends on the specific load situations. For example: when many uploads happen concurrently, the upload server will be clustered onto multiple machines, while in situations where the actual portals are heavily loaded, they will be moved to separate machines.

This way, the MediaCloud platform can be step-by-step expanded to the scale of the major video communites, like MyVideo.

MediaCloud fullservice hosting

As MediaCloud requires at least one dedicated GNU/Linux server, this of course implies more maintenance efforts and skills as some standard webhosting package. Therefore we also provide MediaCloud as an ready-to-run application service (hosted on our servers), including regular maintenance. As the customer, you don't have to cope with these tasks anymore, just concentrate on your core business.
